Inventory Turnover Rate

A ratio that indicates how many times a company has sold and replaced its inventory during a given period. This KPI tells you how fast you are selling your inventory.

Formula: Cost of Goods Sold ÷ Average Inventory

Back Order Rate

A company's backorder rate is the percentage of orders that cannot be delivered at the scheduled time but will be delivered later—this KPI to identify why certain items are not in stock to deal with trends.

Formula: (# of Customer Orders Delayed due to Backorder ÷ Total # of Customer Orders Placed) x 100

Inventory to sales ratio

The inventory to sales ratio indicates the rate at which the company is liquidating its inventory. This KPI tells how efficient a company is in managing its inventory.

Formula: Average Inventory ÷ Net Sales

Day Sales Inventory

The day sale of inventory indicates the average time in days that a company takes to turn its inventory, including goods that are a work in progress, into sales.

Formula: (Average Inventory ÷ Cost of Sales) x 365

Cost of Carrying Inventory

The percentage is representing cents per dollar that are spent on inventory overhead each year. This KPI tells you how much you will spend to hold and store your inventory annually.

Formula: Carrying Costs ÷ Overall Cost

Rate of Refund

The percentage of shipped items has returned to you. This KPI tells you how much of your inventory is being returned to you, allowing you to identify any patterns of issues.

Formula: (# of Items Returned) ÷ (Total # of Items Shipped)

Average Inventory

The average inventory indicates the mean value of an inventory during two or more specified time periods. This KPI tells you how much inventory stock you have on average during a specific time frame.

Formula: (Beginning Inventory + Ending Inventory) ÷ 2


Shrinkage indicates the percentage of the difference between recorded inventory on a company's balance sheet and its actual inventory. This KPI tells you the loss of inventory due to clerical error, goods being damaged, lost, or stolen.

Formula: (Cost of Recorded Inventory – Cost of Physical Inventory) ÷ Cost of Recorded Inventory

On-Time Orders (OTD)

The ratio indicates customers' orders shipped on or before the requested delivery date. This KPI indicates your performance in getting customers their orders within the specified time.

Formula: # of Orders Delivered On-Time ÷ Total # of Orders

Inventory Accuracy

This indicates the percentage of inventory that is tracked and physically present. This KPI tells the accuracy of your tracked inventory compared to physical inventory in the warehouse.

Formula: (Database or Software Inventory / Physical Inventory) x 100

Out of Stock

The Out of Stock Items KPI indicates the percentage that measures the number of items that are out of stock at the time a customer places an order.

Formula: # of items out of stock / # of items in stock

Cost per Line

Cost per line KPI is used to measure the cost to receive a line item on a purchase order.

Formula: (Total Cost of Receiving) / (Total Line Items)

Weeks on Hand

The Week on Hand indicates the average time in weeks that a company takes to turn its inventory, including goods that are a work in progress, into sales.

Formula: (average inventory for period/cost of sales for the period) x 52

Sell Through Rate

The Sell-through rate indicates the comparison of the inventory amount sold and the amount of inventory received from a manufacturer.

Formula: (# units sold / # units received) x 100

Accuracy of Forecast Demand

Accuracy of forecast demand indicates the percentage of how close the actual on-hand quantity is to the forecast. It checks on what a company forecasted, ordered, and sold in the prior period.

Formula: [(actual – forecast) / actual] x 100

Time to Receive

Time to receive indicates the rate at which employees bring in and arrange to sell new stock. This KPI analyzes the efficiency of a company’s stock receiving process.

Formula: time for stock validation + time to add stock to records + time to prep stock for storage

Put Away Time

Put away time is the amount of time it takes for a company to stow inventory. This KPI tells you how effective your put-away process is.

Formula: total time to stow received stock

Order Cycle Time

It indicates the average time a company takes to fulfill a customer order. It demonstrates how well companies meet demand, including shipping readiness, shipping, and delivery.

Formula: (Time customer received the order – Time customer placed an order) / # total shipped orders)

Service Level

Service Level metric indicates the percentage of customers who do not experience stock-outs.

Formula: (# orders delivered / # orders received) x 100
